The Planet Powers Team have now conducted two Arts Council Wales funded R&D’s. One in December 2022 and one in June 2024.
In June 2024 the project was supported by Pontio and Fran Wen both in Bangor and RSPB Cymru which helped guide the messaging of the piece. This second R&D allowed us to expand our team and work towards consolidating ideas and the structure of the project. The first week delved deep into the rules of the piece, game mechanics, the message we wanted to convey and how best to do that within the framework of the narrative. This culminated in a sharing of some of the aspects that had been developed in the first week such as the school anthem, the school moto and some of the games. The feedback we received from the children that attended the first week’s sharing influenced our work in the second.
In the second week we started to bring the elements together to create a structure that communicated the narrative through a series of interactive games, scenes and digital aspects. The sharing at the end of the second week led participants through the story and all the interactive elements. Following the two weeks in the space more work needed to be done on sculpting the structure, narrative and script. These vital components were completed as part of this phase of development and in preparation for phase 3.
The team behind that vision
R & D December 2022
In the winter of 2022, the creative team got together for the first time to start developing this project. The R&D was funded by Arts Council Wales and consisted of a series of performative book reading in libraries of the book ‘The Little Blue Planet Needs You’ by Frances Bella. The book was the inspiration for the project that is now called ‘The School of Planet Powers for Extraordinary Children’. Following the book readings the creative team which consisted of Eleanor Appleton the writer and producer, Livi Wilmore the digital artist, Chloe Wyn the set designer, Vicki Fleming the co-producer and Gareth Eckley the sound engineer had three days together to develop the idea and structure of the show.
